The SSP conference was last weekend. Delegates are invited on the basis of one for every ten members and, in a country with a population one tenth that of England it was bigger than next weekend’s Respect conference will be. It was an incredibly democratic affair. Everyone who wanted to speak in a debate spoke. There were seats by the stage for those who wished to speak for or against resolutions and there was no filtering out of dissidents by use of speaker slips. Oh if only there was something like that in England.

Socialist Resistance were invited to give greetings. Here’s a clip of Alan Thornett.

So democratic that not a word of criticism of the tape seller was made and the only attempt to get a motion on the subject onto the agenda was ruled out of order…

  2. Compared to what passes for conferences in England the SSP event was exemplary. I suspect that they were willing to cut cde Mc Neilage a bit of slack on account of how vile his former friend has been.

…or because the SSP leadership are openly glad about the actions of their associate. An associate who let us remember, according to his own claims, taped a close friend secretly and then sold that tape to the Murdoch press, assisting in the News of the World’s attempt to get Scotland’s most prominent socialist jailed.

  4. If anyone gets TS jailed it will be the man himself. He tried to convince the party’s leadership to lie on his behalf. The truth would have come out eventually. In this case it emerged in a squalid and disreputable way. I’d say that’s TS’s misjudgement. Never lie to the class is the moral.
