Every trace of the former DDR has almost been eradicated in Berlin. This is part of a mural on the wall of the Finance Ministry. It’s rather kitsch especially if you compare it to Diego de Riviera’s murals at the Ministry of Education in Mexico City. Nevertheless it’s an interesting document from the period.

I’t’s a bit early to write the anti-war movement’s obituary. The manifest strength of feeling against the Iraq war (plus the imperialists’ military failures) has prevented intervention in Iran.Unlike the movements against the Vietnam war or apartheid Iraq offers few attractive protagonists. Many people who were radicalised by Vietnam became revolutonary socialists, in part because of the socialist elements of that struggle and the ANC was a more appealing proposition than most of the combat organisations of the Iraqi resistance.There’s another demonstration in February which I’m confident will be fairly big too. It’s obvious that support for the war is virtually non-existent but it’s true that this is not always translated into active opposition to it.Thanks Louise.
