Hee is the video of Alan Thornett introducing the January SR forum on Respect. Watch out for the great car chase about half way through. My summary of the discussion is below.

  1. It is a good analysis,I would make two observations. If it is a change of “line” for SR to say that you no longer argue for comrades to be active in Respect if they are in circumstances where they are banging thier heads aganst the wall, then doesn’t that mean recognising the futility of arguing previoulsy that people should bang their heads against the wall. Yet SR have oissed off a lot of people n the last two years – who had tried to work in resoect and found it impossible – by your insistance that Respect was the “onle game in town”ii) The conclusion is a bit limp, having analysed that Resepct is effectively dead, and this is a big blow to those of us who argree with a pluralist party (I agree), then Alan simply concludes that SR will try to stop Respect dying???Actually the task is a harder one. How do tose of us socialists who see the need for a pluralist party orinet ourselves now that there is no obviouls vehicle to work in.I frankly admiot I don’t know the answer to this questin. BUt if you recognise that respect is incapable of being midwife to a new party, then that is the discussion that we need to be having.

  2. It was the loss of independent members that made Respect what it is today. Even the last conference showed that there are still some of them around but they are a fast shrinking group. And you are right about the task. That is the thing that we need to start thinking about again.
