JOEL KOVEL ON ECOSOCIALISM AND THE RED-GREEN REVOLUTION

JANE KELLY, Socialist Resistance (editor of Ecosocialism or Barbarism)

AT LSE CHAIRED BY DR. DEREK WALL

VENUE: Room G108, 20 Kingsway Building (‘G’ Building), Portugal Street (Opposite Peacock Theatre), LSE Campus
Prof. Joel Kovel, Jewish-American political activist and respected academic in psychoanalysis and the social sciences, will give a talk at the London School of Economics (LSE) on Friday May 4th 2007 at 6pm about Eco-socialism and his new book, ‘Overcoming Zionism’. In an event chaired by Dr. Derek Wall, Visiting Lecturer at Goldsmiths College and Male Principal Speaker of the Green Party of England and Wales, Prof. Kovel will discuss the latest developments in Eco-socialism, an idea that Prof. Kovel has detailed thoroughly in his acclaimed book ‘The Enemy of Nature: The End of Capitalism or the End of the World?’. Eco-socialism sees capitalism as the cause of ecological destruction and social injustice, and Kovel advocates a complete restructuring of society to move towards a world based on sustainability, equality, peace and participatory democracy.

  1. How did this go? I’ve heard Joel Kovel a couple of times now, and his workshop at our Solidarity summer school… oh, three years ago? in Atlanta — it was really, really excellent. I thought he had some very fascinating theoretical stuff to say about Marx and ecology. Kovel can also be kind of problematic, in terms of actual activist or internal politics. He’s uneven, I guess I’m saying.Anyway, what did you think?

I wasn’t able to go. I’m told that he was very good earlier in the week speaking on Zionism but rather more fuzzy last night.Perhaps someone who did go would like to comment.(BTW I got my annual summons from PQ. I’m meeting him on the 14th in my usual watering hole.)

  3. Your annual summons. Ha. He’s not going to see Alistair this time, which is a shame. Apparently, he and Mary are jaunting off to the continent. Did you know they’re married, by the way? She’s MJQ, now. It was a lovely, sweet wedding, last summer. A courthouse affair.I’m loving your video clips, by the way. You’re obviously online late tonight — you could write an e-mail!
