1. Statement from Left Alternative officers

The officers of the Left Alternative are sad to have to inform our members of the resignations of John Rees and Lindsey German from the officers group and National Council. However, they remain members of the Left Alternative.

John and Lindsey have been tireless members of the officers group and National Council since the inception of Respect. As National Secretary, John has provided consistent judgment and direction in the most difficult political circumstances, while Lindsey has been our inspirational Mayoral candidate in the GLA elections in both 2004 and 2008.

The National Council, at its meeting on 6th September, agreed a unanimous vote of thanks to John and Lindsey for everything they have done for our organisation. We are proud to have them as members of the Left Alternative and look forward to continuing to work with them in campaigns from Stop the War to the People before Profit Charter.

    Obviously the Left Alternative is not worth the efforts of 2 Central Committee members. Is the LA about to join the other parked special united fronts – Globalise Resistance springs to mind?

    it just shows what utter political failures the SWP are

    30+ years on and they are still small, miniature when compared to European parties of the Left.

    these people are professional activists, it is all they do day in day out, and they are utterly useless at it, by their own criteria

    failure after failure:

    1) StWC, millions lost, down next to nothing
    2) create Respect, support Galloway’s iffy goings-on
    3) get stitched by Galloway, lose the plot
    4) start another front organisation, watch it fail at the London election
    5) haemorrhage members Left, Right and Centre
    6) Piss off nearly everyone else on the Left.
    7) watch this other front organisation collapse

    complete inadequates, useless

    It’s obvious that some reckoning is being made following the catastrophes of the last year or so. The document to which Andy links correctly asserts that there remains a real opportunity to build something to Labour’s left. One hopes that the comrades in the SWP who are committed a formation of this type use the coming months to determine how they can be part of this process.

    The tone is quite amusing though, all this nonsense about resigning, and thanking them for their contribution.
    It’s like someone talking to themselves in the mirror after too much red wine and an episode of CSI.

    Its a bit pointless crowing from the RR perspective. RR seems to be of a view its George or nothing. I am hearing of complete non activity in the vast majority of the country from RR. Comrades are reporting RR did sweet FA over the pay revolt and have not planned any repsonse to further strikes. Instead the strategy is East London and B’Ham and stuff everything else? Is this correct? What happend to the strategy of the national organisation?
    As far as I can see Galloway has not got a cats in hells chance of winning. Salma, its possible but probably unlikely. Anyway with Salma now on the New Labour payroll via a quango its doubtful she will hang around if it fails. So lets not get to smug re LA.

    Is it really worth putting everything into Galloway’s bandwagon for this!!! Is this what Thornett wants to be associated with? How far are you prepared to let this go?

    And the persepective is…all roads lead to East End for Galloway…

    I think I’ve worked out what Blake is trying to do despite its obvious sophistication.

    Here’s my hunch. The Left List / Alternative has collapsed and there has been a pre-conference power struggle inside the SWP’ leadership in which the members were not involved. So to deflect discussion on that he’s dredged up a quote from GG and reminds us of the weakness of Respect.

    Respect had reached a critical mass in term of membership, public profile and elected representatives about a year before the split. The novel concept of the “united front of a special kind” was designed to make sure that it could not develop its own independent political culture and those who imposed this model on it are responsible for its subsequent weakness.

    The conference later this year is an opportunity to start rebuilding the organisation and the discussion at conference will largely look at how we can relate to the economic crisis. It’s a perfect moment for anyone who wants to build a class struggle party with some roots in parts of the most deprived areas of Britain to join.

    thinking about it, I suspect that the SWP leadership realise that they have very few resources or members left, so have to focus on areas where they can recruit people: campus’s and anti-war stuff

    if there is a stark choice between electioneering vs. anti-war work they’d obviously choose the latter, they are probably dreaming of more wars around the globe as a means of building themselves up, again

    which is a bit unlikely, but a new influx of gullible students may help them regenerate their membership numbers, for a while

    Modernity – “they are probably dreaming of more wars around the globe” – that is just a downright silly thing to say and does not contribute in any way whatsoever to the discussion. Let’s lay off the rhetoric.

    A couple of other tried to make the same point more forcefully but had not read the comments policy.
