Here’s a random selection of what, in my spot on opinion, are some of the best songs this year. Enjoy!

The Low Anthem – Charlie Darwin (Oh My God, Charlie Darwin)

This is my recording of their performance in Rough Trade. It’s fragile and beautiful.

Brakes – Why tell the truth (when it’s easier to lie?) (Touchdown)

Robust indie pop and just what you want good English music to sound like.

The Decemberists – The Rake’s Song (The Hazards of Love)

If you want to write a song about killing children make it literate and play it for laughs.

Fanfarlo – The Walls Are Coming Down (Reservoir)

In an Arcade Fire groove but it’s a great song from a strong album.

Fuck Buttons – Olympian (Tarot Sport)

Timelessly brilliant. Walk through a city while listening. Probably 2009’s best piece of music.

The Hornblower Brothers – Android With A Heart

Lovely. Chirpy.

Noah And The Whale – The First Days Of Spring (The First Days Of Spring)

If you’ve ever been dumped by someone you love here’s the song for you.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Zero (It’s Blitz)

Dance!

Jason Lytle – It’s The Weekend (Yours Truly The Commuter)

Grandaddy’s eminence grise still has it.

Eminem – We Made You (Relapse)

He spent a couple of years doing drugs and self abusing. Who hasn’t? This justifies it.

Times New Viking – My Head (Rip it off)
"I need more money ‘cos I need more drugs" is a great refrain for less than two minutes  of perfect sonic distortion. It makes me smile.

  2. Good stuff but pretty weird when you try to play a few songs at once- I had assumed that starting one would stop the other.

May be when I’ve got time (like never) I’ll listen to each one by one…
