SOCIALIST RESISTANCE and GREEN LEFT seminar

A seminar studying the causes of the Palestine conflict, with an emphasis on frequently ignored issues.
Speakers include Gilbert Achcar, Ghada Karmi, and Joel Kovel.

ABOUT THE MAIN SPEAKERS:

Gilbert Achcar, professor of Development Studies and International
Relations at SOAS, is a Lebanese academic and socialist activist. His many articles on Middle Eastern issues have been published in International Viewpoint, Le Monde Diplomatique, and ZNet. His books include Eastern Cauldron: Islam, Afghanistan, Palestine and Iraq in a Marxist Mirror; The Clash of Barbarisms; The Making of the New World Disorder; Perilous Power: The Middle East and U.S. Foreign Policy (with Noam Chomsky) and The 33-Day War: Israel’s War on Hezbollah in Lebanon and its Consequences (with Michel
Warschawski).

Ghada Karmi, a Palestinian doctor and activist, was born in Jerusalem, from which she and her family were expelled with the establishment of the state of Israel in 1948. She is a research fellow at Exeter University’s Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies, teaching courses in the Palestine/Israel conflict, and the history of Arab medicine. A long-standing advocate of a one-state solution in Palestine, she has published many articles. Her books
include Married to another man: Israel’s dilemma in Palestine, The
Palestinian Exodus 1948-1998, and her memoir In Search of Fatima: A Palestinian Story.

Joel Kovel is a US academic and political activist. He was co-author of The Eco-Socialist Manifesto, and is editor-in-chief of the Journal Capitalism Nature Socialism and a leading member of the US Green Party. In 2009, Bard College in New York fired him as Professor of Social Studies (a post he had held for twenty years) following right-wing attacks on his book Overcoming Zionism: Creating a Single Democratic State in Israel/Palestine. His other
books include The Enemy of Nature: The End of Capitalism or the End of the World?, Red Hunting in the Promised Land, and White Racism: A Psychohistory.
