Jean Ferrat, the radical French singer died yesterday. He won’t be that well known to English speaking audiences but a lot of people on the left in France will be mourning him. Mrs Mac tells me that French schoolchildren were taught his songs like “Nuit et brouillard” – a reflection on the Holocaust and the need to remember it – by their Communist teachers. The video which has the lyrics scrolling across, are pretty powerful, all the more so when you discover that his father died in Auschwitz.
I like the line in “Ma France” “Elle répond toujours du nom de Robespierre ” Quite right.
Olivier Besancenot said “many thousands of anti capitalists have lost a poet and a comrade”.
Even if your French isn’t that great persevere and I think you’ll find the songs powerful and moving.
