No matter hoimagew appalled you are by the actions of the Israeli state you can rely on one thing. As sure as the earth turns Major Avital Leibovich and Mark Regev pop up like buboes over every media outlet to explain how reasonable it all was.

Leibovich is the B team. Her English isn’t as fluent as you’d expect of someone doing a job with such a high profile. On the credit side she is refreshingly blunt. Her standard response is a variation on “we didn’t mean to kill those children yesterday but shit happens. Anyway it saved us the trouble of doing it to the little jihadi bastards in twenty years’ time”. She makes no effort to hide her racist contempt for Palestinians and given that she’s an officer in the Israeli state’s army there is no earthly reason why she should.

Regev’s approach is slightly different. In his telling the Israeli Defence Force are slightly clumsier versions of Mother Teresa who are just a bit accident prone with guns and bombs when they are anywhere near a Palestinian. Countless TVs and radios must have been smashed over the years as people have been obliged to listen to him explain how it’s perfectly possible to drop hundreds of tons of high explosives in built up areas and not mean any harm to the people who live there.

His ongoing defence of the siege of Gaza defies belief. He was to be heard on British radio yesterday explaining both that it’s perfectly possible to buy luxuries like Snickers and ketchup there and that it’s entirely reasonable to prevent homes from being rebuilt just in case some of the cement is used to make bombs. This is always accompanied by a description of the passionate commitment to Palestinian welfare the Israeli state demonstrates on a daily basis by allowing in just enough food and medicine to prevent mass starvation.

The other part of his narrative is that the Hamas regime poses an existential threat to the Israeli state. The plucky little IDF armed to the teeth only with state of the art weaponry from the United States is to be constantly vigilant against Hamas’ armoury constructed in garages using timers from washing machines. Yet every single time he’s allowed to get away with this farrago.

Originally I’d intended to make an exception to this site’s rules on personal abuse and express a few opinions on Regev. On reflection you just have to accept that there’s always going to be some sleazebag who willing to justify anything for money. The real problem seems to be that the first reflex of most media outlets is an overwhelming urge to let people like Regev  and Leibovich explain how the latest atrocity was actually motivated by a desire to prevent further Palestinian suffering. No one from Gaza was given anything like the same airtime by broadcasters who preface every question with the assertion that they accept the Israeli state’s right to “self defence”. Even when its behaviour is at its most outrageous the Israeli state is always given special treatment.

Thanks to Richard for the video of yesterday’s demonstration in Manchester. For the record there was an impromptu protest outside Belfast city hall too which drew 3-400 people.

  1. Dear Comrades

I visited occupied Palestine two months ago. It is apparent that the capitalist dispensation in occupied Palestine is akin to the apartheid capitalist state we endured in South Africa. Funding the military industrial machine and the cost of maintaining the special body of armed men, means the bourgeoisie is making a tremendous amount of money from this insecurity. This financial incentive for perpetuating the current dispensation is irresistible.

Furthermore, there are Palestinian Authority representatives who are also making tremendous amounts of money through cooperating with the Israeli apartheid capitalist state. These “representatives” share revenue from contracts to build the apartheid wall, by supplying Palestinian labour at a cheap rate. The surplus is then appropriated as their profits. There are many examples of this type of cooperation that was brought to my attention during my stay in the West Bank.

In order to perpetuate the apartheid capitalist state, it is important to employ the likes of Netanyahu and his epigones to justify the unjustifiable. With a sufficiently large enough payout available, “sleazeballs” are dime a dozen.

The five largest armament producing nations are the five nations sitting on the UN Security Council. As we know, the purpose of state is to protect the interests of their ruling class. If the ruling class is making tremendous profits from the armament trade, then there is no incentive to drive forward the agenda of peace. Instead, they must contain the protests of the working-class, while simultaneously ensuring that their bourgeoisie profits from the suffering of the Palestinian.

To mask the exploitation of the working-class of both Israel and Palestine, the bourgeoisie utilises demagogues on both sides, to misdirect the attention of the working-class from their avowed enemy, the bourgeoisie. Instead they aver that the fight is between the Jew and the Muslim. This is akin to the misdirection used in South Africa, namely the fight is between the Whites and the Blacks. Plainly, the bourgeoisie knows no race, nor religion – the bourgeoisie are from all races and all religious denominations. The struggle is between antagonistic classes, between the bourgeoisie and the working-class!

Demagogy, within an oppressive apartheid capitalist state leads to the proliferation of terrorist activities. As mentioned above, it is in the bourgeois interest to support and perpetuate demagogy. We must always condemn terrorist forms of struggle, as the only outcome of such struggle is the justification for intensification of suppression of the working-class by the special body of armed men; consequently only the bourgeoisie will profit from terrorist tactics. Instead, the struggle must be for the struggle towards socialism, the struggle of the working-class against their enemy, the bourgeoisie.

    V. I. Lenin puts it well when he says, “the terrorists bow to the spontaneity of the passionate indignation of intellectuals, who lack the ability or opportunity to connect the revolutionary struggle and the working-class movement into an integral whole.”

The passionate indignation of intellectuals of all nations must be directed towards the class struggle, and the demagogues must be emasculated for indeed, the demagogues are the worst enemy of the working-class.

As mentioned in the article, the media airtime afforded to the Netanyahu epigones by the bourgeois media apparatus is disproportional. We must only observe who owns the media apparatus, to know whose interest it serves. Bourgeois control over the media apparatus, the propaganda machine means that they can spew lies through their media trumpets, following the adage that he who shouts loudest must be telling the truth.

Instead, when travesties such as the attack on the humanitarian flotilla occur, the working-class must be explained the causes of the brutality i.e. the profiteering of the bourgeoisie of many nations, from the military subjugation and suppression of the Palestinian working-class. We must ensure that the class analysis remains the foundation of our political work. In this way, the lies perpetuated by the bourgeois Netanyahu epigones are exposed plainly. The indignation of the working-class must be directed towards their true enemy, the bourgeoisie.

The only way that peace will ever come to the region is when the capitalist states ruling class, the bourgeoisie are put down. Literally, peace will only come with a socialist revolution in the counties who are currently profiting from the suffering of the Palestinian people. Short of a socialist revolution, the profit incentive behind war will ensure that the indignity suffered by the Palestinian working-class will continue ad infinitum.

  2. Yet again, the media soft soap the Israelis and it didn’t take long for the ‘responding to provocation’ line to start being trotted out.

Last night, a news broadcaster asked how Israel was going to repair relations with Turkey – everything is framed in terms of how plucky little Israel is going to recover from setbacks like this!

If any other country had done what they did, can you imagine how different the response would have been e.g. Syrians boarding an Israeli ship?

  3. Even more so, a situation where – as Doug suggests – Syrian troops (or Iranians) board an aid convoy in international waters and shoot up the passengers, who happen to include a number of British citizens – whose fate is still currently unknown. In those circumstances the UK govt. would probably be threatening war.

You’re right, that bastard Regev has already cost one smashed TV remote control this week

Why the BBC seem incapable of challenging this weasel is beyond me.

I’ve only ever seen the delightful Jon Snow on C4 news wind him up, press his buttons and slap him down.

The occasions are too few and far between unfortunately

  7. The BBC are outrageous. They currently have a “Have Your Say” story entitled “Was Israel right to board the flotilla?”

MV Rachel Corrie is still headed for Gaza, btw.

  10. Thanks for that post Liam. Spot on. I was dreading that weasel Negev turning up and there he was on Channel 4 tonight. Smiling. The TV didn’t realise it came within an inch of its life. Was trying to think of some sort of dedication – ‘we will not rest until he is strung up with the entrails of the last IDF general’ or something… but the rage is incoherent. What’s the motivation? He’s well paid, of course. But he has the eyes of the true believer. It is Zionism that’s at the heart of the lies. Anything – mass murder, lies, torture, assassination, white phosphorous, nuclear weapons, anything – is justified if it is in defence of the Zionist state and it is his role to put the smiling face on it, deflect the argument, switch attention, play all the cheap PR tricks, never lose your cool, never let the mask slip. Couldn’t believe the way he talked about the danger of missiles maybe being smuggled into Gaza that could ‘maybe even reach Tel Aviv’, when you think of the constant avalanche of misslies being shipped to Israel that actually ARE reaching Rafah, Gaza City, Khan Younis etc. I remember Netanyahu played the same role at the time of the first Gulf War in 1991, the same menacing air of calm PR-school reasonableness, the same phoney dramatics (the gas mask at hand to put on during scud missile attacks), the same little lamb act. And you’re right, he gets off too light, even with Jon Snow.
Immensely proud of the MV Rachel Corrie for pressing on to Gaza. When’s the next flotilla?
Btw, there was a protest of maybe 300 in Derry on Monday as well and we’re marching again this Saturday.
