Here are the tracks Nick Clegg chose to take onto his desert island

  • Chopin’s Waltz in A Minor
  • Johnny Cash’s version of Sunday Morning Coming Down, a particular singalong favourite of mine which he’s ruined forever
  • The Cross by Prince
  • Cesária Évora ‘s Petit Pays
  • Street Spirit by Radiohead
  • Bowie’s Life on Mars
  • Shakira’s Waka Waka the theme to the 2010 World Cup
  • Schubert’s Impromptu No.3 in G Flat Major.

For readers unfamiliar with the radio programme the conceit is that each week some notable selects a few pieces of music and then talks about their life. It’s a consistently great way to be disappointed by people for whom you have some regard.

Anyway here are some random suggestions about what Clegg should have chosen. Other ideas are welcome.

The Dead Kennedys’ Kill the poor is pretty much the coalition’s programme so that has to be in there.

He likes Radiohead so he can have Creep.

Now that her rehabilitation is complete we’ll chuck in I’m in love with Margaret Thatcher by the Not Sensibles.

Simply because it’s such a bloody awful song and he deserves to be made to hear it four times an hour let’s include Pitbull’s Hotel Room.

Running the world by Jarvis Cocker has some pertinent observations about the state of British politics.

The Stooges’ I wanna be your dog is a good description of the Lib Dems’ role in the coalition.

World of shit by Eels, for fairly obvious reasons.

And since he dragged Johnny Cash into his gutter Busted just about sums up the Lib Dems’ prospects.

Since he’s a Sheffield MP, what about The Human League’s Don’t You Want Me? “I knew I’d find a much better place/Either with or without you/The five years we have had have been such good times/I still love you/But now I think it’s time I lived my life on my own/I guess it’s just what I must do”
