This year’s Mayday march seemed to be the largest in a while and certainly had more union banners. Some of them show the contradictory nature of class consciousness. There was a great turnout from the RMT. As usual the Turkish stalinists put on a magnificent show and don’t look for a moment as if they feel they bet on the wrong horse.

In the pub I sought the advice of a prominent member of Workers’ Power about who to vote for when offered a choice between Respect, Labour and the BNP. He thinks it’s best to abstain and build an anti-fascist mass campaign. He’s pretty sure his psychiatrist agrees.

    Liam – I am a little intrigued by the decision of Respect to stand against every Labour candidate.On the basis of your local knowledge, are none of the Labour candidates in the whole borough any good?Does Respect have a working relationship with labour lefts over practical local issues?Anyway – good luck on Thursday. I will be facsinated to see how Respect does!

    There is nothing that you can call a Labour left locally. No figurehead or current has emerged which is prepared to take a stand against Blairism. I’m open to correction but I can’t even remember any Labour councillor at an anti-war meeting.
