Here is the first of the videos from the Socialist Resistance day school on the Middle East. It features Ewa Jasiewicz who was speaking on behalf of the organisations Platform and Hands Off Iraqi Oil.

She discussed the impending Hydrocarbon Law. Contrary to the widely held view it was written by Iraqi officials overseen by the Bush administration and the IMF. It will probably become law in May.

The effect of it will be to transfer control of Iraqi oil to imperialist multi-nationals. Ewa describes in some detail the role of the oil workers’ union and outlines some of the protest activities that will b happening outside Iraq. However this does not like it’s going to be a story with a happy ending.

Apologies for the large amount of wall in the video. It’s not some deliberately avantgarde technique and the other videos show rather more of the action. You would not believe that my camera operator on this shoot sometimes makes a living lecturing on aesthetics and art . The rest of the time of course he is out doing something manual and proletarian.

Yeah but Liam you precisely say it is an avant garde technique being lectured at a film school near you!! Socialist Resistant films beckons….Btw: Ewa gave a very good, sobering and frank talk about the oil situation and the brave oil workers. It certainly won’t be a happy ending!!

  2. As for putting theory into practice, you said it yourself Liam – I ‘lecture’ on aesthetics. Pah! Aesthetics? I spit on them (or it). What a petty bourgeois deviation. Still, a nice little earner.

  3. Hey Liam, how can I get a hyperlink to these videos. When I search in Google video, Gilbert’s comes up but not Ewa’s or Francois’s.
