Gone are the old shibboleths of politics in the north of Ireland. Sinn Fein which used to owe a debt to the French Revolution has decided that there’s more to science than Darwinism. There’s intelligent design too.

This story comes from Socialist Demcracy’s Stormont Watch blog.

While there is no shortage of political dinosaurs roaming around the Assembly, their existence had not yet called evolutionary biology into question. That was until this week and the intervention of the DUP’s Mervyn Storey at a meeting of the education committee. He demanded that the minister bring forward proposals “to ensure that scientific explanations, other than Darwinian evolution, are taught in schools as scientific explanations”. This was clearly a reference to the theory of “intelligent design” which dresses up divinely inspired creationism as science. Such theories have been comprehensively debunked by the scientific community, and even the federal courts in the US have outlawed it’s inclusion in science classes as unconstitutional.

The only thing more ridiculous than the DUP proposal was the response of the education minister. Rather than dismiss this as the nonsense it is Sinn Fein’s Catriona Ruane accommodated it, assuring the DUP that in the revised curriculum would “be greater flexibility for schools to include teaching of alternative theories to evolution”. Under the spurious concept of concept of equality that prevails at Stormront theological claptrap is put on a par with scientific theory. However, this just one small part of a broader peace process in reaction and bigotry are recognised and accommodated as legitimate. No wonder the DUP are satisfied with this settlement. Under its terms no one will be making monkeys out of them.

Under the same concept, certain members of the DUP are demanding that Ulster Scots/Ullans/Ballymena English be on a par with the Irish language (especially in terms of spending). I guess that’s parity of esteem for you in our twisted little statelet. In terms of the bigger picture, the intelligent design “theory” seems to have begun spreading beyond the US Bible Belt (and beyond the Antrim Bible Belt too). I’ve been told that creationism has begun to appear in the English curriculum as well. It’d be funny if it weren’t so frightening.

  2. I did some research on the census a while back & was fascinated by the Ulster Scots version of the form & supporting materials – last time I looked I couldn’t find it online, but it was headed something like”Hae a read o this afore ye fill yur census foarm in”I’d love to know who was behind it – I can’t believe the DUP & friends have the necessary academic clout to pull together an entire language, but maybe that’s just my prejudice. And, obviously, I’d like to know what they were thinking – did anyone really think there were people out there who’d fall on that form with glad cries of “At last, a census form I can read!”beyond the US Bible Belt (and beyond the Antrim Bible Belt too)Look up the Great Revival some time; it was very big in America, but on this side of the Atlantic it only really took in NI (in Britain the main result was the formation of the Plymouth Brethren). Ulster Prod culture really is different.

This Ulster Scots business is an inspired bit of gravy train engineering. Who had ever heard of it until the UVF decided there was money in it. But the Republicans are too gutless to ridicule it for the joke that it is. Here’s a link to a video of an uncle of mine talking a “language” I’m hoping to get a grant to preserve. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N47gvKXNeJo

  4. Ruane hasnt a clue what she is talking about! Even in the bible belt of the US, a judge has rules conclusively after a long drwan out court case, that Intelligent Design belongs in the religious classroom and not the science classroom! It is fairly obvious that ID is creationism under another heading and for Ruane to bring such an important issue into the pussy futting between SF and the DUP is a disgrace! She hasnt a clue, isnt an authority on anything and if she pursues with this line ….she is a disgrace!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
