Another Respect councillor quits – in a bad way
I’ve been indicating for a while that Respect in Tower Hamlets is less than stable. Here a report from the East London Advertiser on another councillor’s departure. I confidently predict that we’ll be told in some detail how evil and useless he was by a Respect fulltimer using skills acquired elsewhere. A MEMBER of MP…

A MEMBER of MP George Galloway‘s Respect party has quit his seat on Tower Hamlets council… with a savage attack on his “bickering, immature and self-serving” former colleagues.

If there is a by-election this will be a huge test for Respect.

The by-election will be 9th August.http://www.towerhamlets.gov.uk/templates/news/detail.cfm?newsid=7783This ward was Respect’s strongest result in May 2006, the only one where they won all seats – as AN says “a huge test”

This is the price the organisation has paid for trying to keep politics out of a political organisation. There is no such thing as a distinct Respect political culture. Rather it’s a series of alliances which agree to disagree and while there are regular flare-ups over positions and status explicit political arguments are frowned upon. Goodness only knows where the organisation picked up that quirk.

Someone posted a comment about this on your website on Sunday, another Labour blog heard the rumour on Tuesday when it was noted that on the council website Respect had two candidates for the ward. This councillor was one of the rebels at last years AGM and it is hardly surprising that something like this would occur. Is John Rees’s dream of taking control of Tower Hamlets council now expired? Perhaps he just left because of “changed personal circumstances” as I have heard Respect put it.
