BH According to Indymedia Brian Haw, who has been camping outside Parliament for more than six years as an anti-war protest, is planning to stand as a candidate for London Mayor later this year although there is no mention of it on Brian’s own site. Here is an extract from his press statement:

Today’s London under Labour control is an unpleasant place to live and work. There is more crime, more congestion and more pollution after 8 years of Ken Livingstone in charge. Under Ken our transport fares have doubled. Mayor Brian Haw pledges to cut congestion and pollution by cutting bus and tube fares as well as scrapping the Congestion Charge and making more efficient use of our existing roads by dismantling certain Bus Lanes. Brian also cannot see the purpose of elongated buses for which London’s roads are totally unsuitable. Unlike Ken, as mayor, Brian Haw will promote the use of clean fuels such as Bio-Diesel, LPG and Electric delivery vans. Mayor Brian Haw will put our police back on the streets thereby making our children feel safer walking to school. Our parking fines and congestion charges have been used by Ken Livingstone’s GLA to buy illegal hollow nosed bullets as were used to murder Jean Charles de Menezes and now American Tasers for our police and therefore help pay for the phoney war on terror. Brian Haw will put our police back catching real criminals such as drug dealers, rapists and muggers. Ken Livingstone has supported Gordon Brown in his war against our Muslim brothers and sisters, therefore the blood is on his hands as much as Gordon Brown and Tony Blair.

We can all agree on the anti-war and fare reduction parts of that and many of us will approve of the anti-Livingstone bits too. The sentences about policing cause a sharp intake of breath though.

Is getting nominated by Channel Four viewers as ‘Most Inspiring Political Figure of the Decade” sufficient evidence of a massive support? Probably not. It’s still a little bit early to decide if there is a viable alternative candidate to Livingstone but I’m pretty confident it’s not Brian, no matter how laudable his protest has been.

  1. A mixed bag of policies indeed, is he competing with John Bird, also going for Mayor on some populist policies both left and right

Biodiesal which could be based on palm oil from rainforests is pretty dodgy as well…surprised that Brian isn’t aware why it is a problem.

There is a big debate about the Greens and others on the left supporting Ken with a second preference on socialist unity at present and on my blog.

  2. In all seriousness, I think Brian has some mental health issues. I’m not against people with mental health issues runing for office, but I think he may need to get that sorted before running for mayor and frankly before people would take him seriously as a candidate.

  3. I don’t think this is true Liam. There’s no mention of this anywhere you can vaguely trust.

A facebook group, a spam press release site and indymedia are the only places this has been announced. Not his own website or by any other news agency (anmd it is news that they would report if true) I think someone’s trying to stich Brian up and we shouldn’t give this story any credibility.

  4. Out of interest, viz Respect Renewal, several of my comrades who went up to Brum to campaign for Respect, I think in 2004 or 2005 complained that they were being instructed to tell people that they favoured putting more police on the street. My comrades told me they refused point blank to put forward this policy as they didn’t agree with it!

  5. Accusing Livingstone of supporting Gordon Brown in his war on Muslims is over the top rubbish. It discredits the entire anti-war movement.

  6. Once again Adan J you are playing the role of an innocent sounding but disreputable troll. You claim ‘my comrades’ refused to do something they disagreed with in 2004 or 2005. Now Respect Renewal didn’t come into being until 17 September 2007. Surely any problems in policy with which you disagreed in 2004/5 are the responsibility of the pre-split Respect which you support . . . or has Doctor Who joined Renewal?

  7. By a happy coincidence I was an active canvasser in Birmingham in 2004, and I can say that once again, Adam J has chosen to believe some bullshit – and then chosen to spread it. The key issues we went out about were the war, housing and Labour’s attacks on Muslims and young people and immigrants,

Adam, once again you’ve done pretty much what you do every time there’s a chance to bash people who support the renewal of Respect.

When are you gonna stop and look at your own motives and sources of information?

  8. I think Brian Haw talks alot of sense and i for one will be voting for him.
London wants to see the back of Livingstone who has been a thoroughly bad mayor.
