You need to be careful if you use the Internet to check out what the Teenage Fanclub are up to. Click on some of the links that the search throws up and you’ll probably find the police will be knocking on your door at 6am and your photo on the front page of the local paper a couple of days later.

The Teenies are not the hardest working men in rock. Their “tour” consists of one date in London and one in Glasgow. Their last album was released in 2005. You’ll probably recall my review in Socialist Resistance at the time. Apart from a Buffalo Springfield cover there were only two new songs tonight and one of those didn’t really cut the mustard.

But there are few experiences more joyful than a Teenage Fanclub performance. I’ve seen all but one or two of their London shows in the last ten years and always spend a lot of the time grinning.  Their strongest work from Grand Prix and Bandwagonesque has lots of big riffs, melodic distortion and harmonies. You get a flavour of this  from the video which uses an experimental camera technique allowing the viewer to share the feeling of being one of the shortest people in the audience.

Great show that it was the performance left the listener wondering what they will do next. After three years they should have been road testing a little bit of new work rather than resting on their laurels. Though they do have very fine laurels to rest on.

  1. Only came across this band recently, bought the grand prix cd and love it. Pity they are not doing more live dates.

  2. Macmullan buy “Four Thousand Seven Hundred and Sixty-Six Seconds: A Short Cut to Teenage Fanclub” and work backwards from there. It’s got some of the best pop songs ever written.

  3. I haven’t heard much of their stuff, but what I have has been mostly sublime. I may look for that compilation – it sounds like a good bet, even if it doesn’t include my personal favourite (“Norman 3”).
