There are more scumbags to the square foot in and around the Houses of Parliament than anywhere else in England. Leaving this evening’s demo I saw Cecil Parkinson, the sort of Thatcherite who should be in New Labour and last time I was down I saw Patricia Hewitt the sort of Thatcherite who is in …. On the other hand the cream of lefty blogging was there. Comrades Harpy and Stroppy were both mooching around taking pictures of what was a young, lively demonstration to maintain the twenty four week limit for abortions.
Now according to this programme I saw on TV last night there are up to two million anti-abortion evangelical Christians plus however many Catholics listen to their priests who have been mobilising around the issue. They don’t seem to have done a very good job if relative turnouts are anything to go by. The anti-abortionists had about one hundred to one hundred and fifty and the right to choose contingent by my unreliable reckoning had four to five hundred with a vocal group of younger women up front.
The good news is that the reactionary mobilisation seems to have been stopped. At the time of writing MPs voted 292 to 217, an amendment that makes it a condition of IVF treatment that there be both a “father and a mother”.
