In the more doolally fringes of the American commentariat it’s suggested that Barack Obama may be a child killer and / or a Satanist / the Antichrist. A poll on the latter site has 68% of respondents answering “yes” or “maybe” to a question on the matter. (If you are connected with one of these links “doolally” is a colloquial expression meaning “respected for one’s insight and willingness to challenge conventional wisdom” used on this side of the Atlantic.) Now they may well be onto something that is hidden from the rest of us and long may they plough their furrow. It’s some of Obama’s friends one feels should know better. Some mid ranking unions bureaucrats connected with the Communist Party of Ireland are going over to help in his campaign. When queried about his recent robust support for the Israeli State and the IDF’s right to randomly murder Palestinians their slightly paraphrased response was “he has to say that sort of thing to get elected but sure isn’t he a grand fella altogether now, to be sure”. Overwhelming evidence of the provincial backward nature of Irish socialism was my first thought.

That was until the headline in yesterday’s Morning Star caught my eye “Obama tells 84,000 ‘enough is enough”. The article that follows could well have written by Obama’s campaign team and puffs his promises to pull out of Iraq and reduce taxes. The enthusiasm for Obama is bursting through in every paragraph and no mention is not even made of the fact that Obama has voted repeatedly to continue funding the occupation of Iraq or the million dollar boxes that the big companies bought at the Democrats’ convention.

To be fair to the British and Irish their American comrades are as well disposed to Obama as the liberal European press arguing “We think this election is a great opportunity to bring an early withdrawal of US troops from Iraq. It can mean job creation and relief for those who are losing their homes or unable to pay their bills.” That is pretty much what Obama says about himself.

Let’s give the last word on the subject to Malik Miah of the US socialist group:Solidarity

I cannot vote for a Democrat or Republican candidate, as each party represents the policies of the ruling class. As a socialist, it is not possible to vote for an African American or woman as the head of either party that is responsible for wars of aggression and occupation in Afghanistan or Iraq and threatens Iran and Palestine. I firmly believe we need to build a mass labor party and political party of the left that can defend the true interest of working people.

  3. Actually Doolally is an army base in India, that was used as a holding station for soldiers waiting for posting.

It was so boring that soldiers used to go stir crazy there, hence the expression Doolally.

I know this because my dad was stationed there when he was in the far east during the war, before transferring into the Indian Army.

  4. Yes Andy that is its old negative meaning but, as you know, that’s not how it’s used anymore. We don’t want to confuse Pico with our Cockney grammar.

  5. Deolali is the setting for the sitcom It Ain’t Half Hot Mum, which is about a Concert Party trying to avoid being sent “up the jungle” by Sargent Major Shut-up. I don’t know if you’re father liked the series, Andy, but members of my family who were in the forces certainly enjoyed it.

  6. I thought the complete phrase was ‘Doolally Tat’. Don’t know how it is spelt, have also heard it was a military base.

It is also, I believe, one of the many pen names of a well-known leader on the far left. It was adopted in the belief that a (mistakenly) Ceylonese-sounding name carried some weight – it fell into disuse. Some still fondly use that name in private.

I have only ever come across Doolally as meaning crazy, but then i may not be as down with the kids as Liam.

“It ain’t arf hot mum” had a certain authenticity about the social attitudes of the other ranks in the Empire, and yes my dad did enjoy it, as being close to his won experience.

Once or twice through my work I have rubbed choulders with the indian army, and they are always suprised when I tell them my dad used to be in it. It seems that while the young thrity something officers know about the Empire in intellectual terms, they are are still (justifiably) horrified to realise that the lived reality is so recent.

  11. I have looked closely at the Obama photo above and I think its a fake. Clever, oh yes, very clever- but done with some electronic wizardry nonetheless.

Just look at those teeth- they are a little too big to fit that mouth convincingly.
And where the horns meet the head, the join is just a little too neat and there doesn’t seem to be any kind of socket into which the Obama-beast could retract them when in public…

interesting as the discussion on the derivation of the word ‘doolally’ is, I’m more interested in how the left perceives the forthcoming presidential election. I haven’t read the stuff in the Morning Star, but, having taken that paper with my mother’s milk, it doesn’t surprise me that they are sympathetic to Obama. So am I.

OK, there’s a long stream of qualifications and caveats that has to go with that statement, but as a fairly frequent visitor to the US, with some links to grassroots and community (but not party political) organisations, I can only report the mood amongst some of the people I know. This is, essentially, one of hope and optimism at the prospect of Obama winning. This is not primarily to do with his colour, but with a sense that he has some connection with the lives of working class Americans. Certainly this may be part of a PR strategy, but low-income tenants I know are genuinely impressed that a possible future President has spent four years working as a tenant organiser. Above all, he has said that he will take US troops out of Iraq and it’s difficult to overstate how popular this is.

Yes, Obama is an establishment politician on the payroll of big business, but this is a two horse race and I know which horse I want to win. (Incidentally, I think insufficeint attention is paid to how reactionary McCainn is.) While I expect disillusionment to spread very quickly after an Obama victory, I see his historic role as being to restore the hope of Americans that things can change and they don’t only have to chose between two faces of the same coin.

Liam, you owe me a beer.
