This video is of George Galloway speaking at a Stop The War meeting in Whitechapel on Tuesday 16 September. There were about 60-70 people present.

He declared in his reply to the discussion that he is looking forward to the catastrophic collapse of capitalism. Wisely enough he observed that he’d heard it predicted as imminent on many occasions before and was not holding his breath this time.

  1. Thanks Liam, will watch that as soon as I have a bit of time. Will you also be putting up a vid of Andrew Murray’s contribution?

  2. No Steph. I didn’t record Andrew’s talk but he was pretty much on the same wavelength as GG.

  3. I generally like Galloways contribution, but have lost a bit of faith in him over recent period. He seems a bit out for himself and his career, hope I am wrong. One question if someone could answer it, Why did Galloway and Respect support New Labour in Glasgow. I couldn’t quite believe it until my mate in the SSP told me. I was a bit confused to say the least. I thought Respect would support others on the left as well as themselves?
good site by the way, a friend put me onto it.
    Thanks

  4. Steve: I reckon you are permanently confused.

GG was good as usual on the slaughter of civilians in Afghanistan. Casualties amongst Afghan civilians are completely acceptable to the US and UK. They use high level bombing instead of helicopters to cut down on their own casualties. Pure cowardice from both a political and a military perspective.

Liam: did you raise the question of Russian imperialism out of interest? Was there a discussion on the matter? I thought Galloway’s contribution on the subject was much more measured on the subject of Georgia than it has been previously.

  5. “Why did Galloway and Respect support New Labour in Glasgow?”

Steve, we didn’t. Respect is should be remembered does not operate in Scotland and recent events on the Scottish left have had differene reflections south of the border. There were in fact four positions represented in Respect – some backed the SSP, some Solidarity and others the SNP. George backed Labour as he sees independence as a serious threat but I suspect on this he was somewhat in a minority within the party.

  7. chjh – I’ve not done anything different so god only knows. I’ve given up asking “why” when it comes to computers.

David – I made the point that Putin is a war criminal but there are some meetings where you can discuss the class nature of the Russian state and others where you can but would look odd if you did. I chose not to explore that question.

  8. steve,
Its simple, Galloway gets to say anything he likes and no one dates offer an alternative viewpoint. Indeed if you weren’t aware he single handedly picked their candidates for the GLA election. Its incrediable as well to know their Nat Exec is hand picked by you know who!!! on the issue of democracry Respect has little to offer the left.

  9. notice the moderation by line- this means this contribution will be air brushed by Liam as many previous have. Liam doesn’t think have any critical view of Galloway is acceptable on his blog. The sad demise of the SR.

  10. Arbuckle – I got fed up with gutless wonders hiding behind phony identities to throw abuse at people who are easily publicly identifiable. It’s politically cowardly and dishonourable and they can go and behave like arseholes somewhere else. I would feel sorry for them but the contempt wins out every time.

If you’ve been following this site you will have seen that there has been a lively and interesting debate between supporters of the SWP, Permanent Revolution, Respect and others on the class nature of Russia, the role of revolutionaries in broad formations and all sorts of other things.

All I ask is political honesty and rudimentary social skills. Anyone who struggles with these exacting standards is welcome to set up their own site.
