This is a touch of the Jeremy Clarkson wing of the Respect party. The local SWP in Dublin have the same populist line. Why not get rid of bus lanes as well. With a congestion vcharge buses go twice as fast and have the possiblility of twice the frequency

Alan Manning who is secretary of the North West TUC has released a statement that they are supporting the congestion charge. Absolute disgrace, they are being thrown the sop of a place at the bosses table. They think they can persuede the bosses to turn it over to public ownership. The workers will pay and the shareholders will reap their dividend. I don`t recall the NWTUC consulting with trade unionists in the region before they came to this appaling decision. The Stalinists are alive and kicking in the NWTUC.

A fast efficient bus service is in the workers interest. A publically owned one even more so.
It worked in London.
Oxford street has buses that now move. Before you could leave a bus, shop and get back in the same bus.
It is Pougadism to oppose congestion charges. Fine have a campaign for extra busses as a complementary thing but don’t just oppose it.

The TIF in Manchester is all about Metrolink tram expansion, existing rail lines are being taken over and converted the trams to run on. This impacts on Railworkers jobs at Manchester Victoria and Wigan depots. Of course everybody wants a better transport system that is publicly owned but this is a private scheme that will line the pockets of shareholders. Why should i pay a tax to drive to and from work, then work the trains that take other people in and out of Manchester. I can start work at 06.30 and not pay to drive into work but because i don`t finish till 16.30 i will have to pay the tax to drive home. The boss class behind the scheme say that by charging motorists to drive into Manchester, `baring in mind that unlike London the first payment band is at least 5 miles from the city centre`. this will pay for the scheme. Well if a large percentage do come out of there cars then where is the money to pay for the scheme coming from then.? The shareholders or is it going on my council tax. I think i know which is favourite.

The trouble with Jim’s position is that he seems to have no idea about the details of either the TIF bid or Respect’s position. But as ever is prepared to claim he knows best. A few pseudo-witticisms about Jeremy Clarkson doesn’t substitute for a thought out policy.
Respect in Manchester is opposing the Congestion charge for a range of reasons – not least is the fact that we are going to be saddled with a £300 million debt just to build the gantries to collect the charge as people drive into the city. That means we will have to pay – via PFI – for the next 25 years. The aim is only to reduce congestion by 30% at peak times. They need the remaining cars to pay the bills. We believe that we need to move away from cars altogether within the city and the TIF bid will make that harder not easier as it will lock car mass use into the regions funding for the next twenty five years while tackling climate change requires us to take measures to reduce car use dramatically. That is why we are campaigning for free public transport as well.
