   I would be interested to hear what the responses were to George Galloway’s speech. I was in parliament (in the public gallery, not as an MP) in 1972, soon after Bloody Friday (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bloody_Friday_(1972)) when Bernadette Devlin made an amazing speech denouncing the historic crimes of British imperialism in Ireland. The commons was completely full. The speeches that followed completely ignored her and just carried on as if she didn’t exist, calling for re-introduction of the death penalty etc.

   Incidentally, the wikipedia entry reminds us that the TV news showed body parts being shovelled into plastic bags (a still accompanies the article). So much for such images being too disturbing to broadcast.

   Galloway was essentially ignored (Rammell objects to his characterization of the UN vote, and that’s about it).

   The body parts being shovelled into bags was after the IRA’s Bloody Friday bombs in Belfast city centre. I remember my father bundled us out of the living room when it came on the local news at 5.40.
