image My first experience of being on a guest list was a bit of an anti-climax. “Hello, I’m Liam, one of Andy’s guests.” That went smoothly enough but there were an embarrassing few seconds as I stood round waiting to be ushered into a private room where I’d be invited to snort cocaine from the thighs of groupies. That didn’t happen and I had to go to the bar and buy my own beer. Is that how it’s supposed to work?

First act of the evening was the June Brides who were doing a one off show as a birthday gift for Phil Wilson’s brother. It seems ungrateful to criticise but Phil found it a challenge to stay on key while singing. The friends and fans who were there didn’t seem to mind and the band played a well received set.

The Brides, as they are probably not called, returned for an encore and were joined by a keyboard player and another guitarist. This song, which was called something in German with “traum” in the title, was a revelation. This was my introduction to the work of Frankfurt band S/T and the musicians were Martin Bauner on guitar and vocals and Joachim Gaertner on the keyboards.

It defies belief how two people can make such a loud, sublime noise and it’s like nothing from the Anglo-American musical tradition. Anchoring themselves in a motorik rhythm that is the hallmark of the greatest modern German music they had this reviewer banging the arm of the sofa (the club was called The Drones after all) and much of the rest of the audience up dancing to songs that are magnificently crafted soundtracks to cities. Mrs Mac’s view is slightly different claiming that she would have nightmares if she listened to their most recent album Und so weiter before going to bed.

Appearances can deceive but Martin does not look like a man who spends much time pumping iron at the gym and he may not have the greatest singing voice in the world. That does not matter. He uses his guitar in a combination with Joachim’s awesomely creative keyboard playing to grab every nerve in your body and pull you into the music and they are compelling performers. It’s a rhythmic electronic cacophony and is very beautiful.

Introducing the band Andy Wilson said they had done the best live show he had ever seen in a lifetime of watching bands. On the strength of Friday’s set that was not hyperbole. The shame is that S/T seem to be allergic to performing and seem to have no further shows scheduled this year. I’d go to see them again tomorrow night.

  1. Well, comrade, I feel really let down by that report. You’ve completely avoided the key question – was Chris Nineham playing in the June Brides? I guess he’d have a bit more time to spare now.

  2. I spotted a couple of SWP staffers but Chris was not among them though he was outside the BBC on Saturday.

  3. No Nineham, I’m afraid Comrade – anyway, there were a lot of ‘older’ SWP members there and he wouldn’t have been very welcome among them.

  4. Oh, and Liam – although it has not yet been announced, S/T will play at the annual Schiphorst festval in late August (http://www.avantgarde-festival.de/) The festival is hosted by Faust member Jean-Herve Peron in northern Germany and is always a great event. I’ll certainly be there.

Or indeed among any other group of SWP members, if conference reports are to be believed
