T2 ‘SCUMBAG MILLIONAIRES’ was a bullseye of a headline in The Sun. It touched a wave of raw anger at the bankers’ greedy short-term bonus culture which has, in large measure, caused the global economic meltdown. Almost everyday brings more news of the bankers’ outrageous fortune, turning simple envy  of  their riches into a force of critique and opposition. Or it would if there was any kind of basis for a left-populist response of the type represented by ‘Scumbag Millionaires’ style hedlines in Britain’s biggest-selling newspaper.

Never mind, Philosophy Football have turned the headline into a superb shirt, complete with a list of the guilty bankers. Slumdog Millionaire deservedly took the Oscars for the kind of feel-good cinema provides to see us through a recession. While our design provides the angry principles to root out the causes. ONLY £14.99 Just the thing to brighten up the day as the economy crashes around our ears, available from www.philosophyfootball.com

  1. “Slumdog Millionaire” is a very good film.

I coudn’t help thinking that its analogies are not confined to India.

Near the beginning, when the litttle lad holds up his autographed photo of the film star, I thought “he’s an Icelandic Banker!”

  3. I want to ask the same question as Carlos: in these days of “openness” and “accountability” we should know why a short-sleeved T-shirt costs £14.99, plus £2.95 p&p. Presumably, the cotton is sourced from sustainable, organic farming co-ops in Cuba?

  4. Ta for the queries.

Philosophy Football is a small business. We have never claimed to produce the cheapest T-shirts tho’ in our view £14.99 is a very reasonable price.

There are two ways it could be cheaper.

Either zero overheads, do it as a hobby or a sideline out of a back bedroom and have little no overheads to cover.

Or cut costs, use cheap and sweatshop cotton, cut labour costs all along the line, pay cash in hand, no tax nowharrimean, no rights for part-time workers and so on.

    Cheap always costs somebody.

I wonder tho’ if there is another T-shirt company which funded thousands of pounds worrk of banners, T-shirts, postcards, window stickers for the Viva Palestina convoy. Last year raised close to £2000 for Cuba Solidarity, and another £1000 for Jail Guitar Doors Organised at its own cost two huge nights for Searchlight, and another night for the Internatoonal Brigade Memorial Trust, helped fund a book on the women of the Spanish Civil War, and another on the poetry of the Spanish Civil War, made a donation to Venezuela Information Centre.

Plus we produced T-shirts for Tolpudle, TUC Green Workplaces Campaign. All staff are paid above the minimum wage, our T-shirts are printed by workers co-ops, we don’t own a company car, we promote progressive campaigns at our own cost to our customer-base, donate umpteen shirts to these good causes too, and any shirts left at the end of a campaign are given to aid charities.

I could go on. ‘Scumdog Millionaires’ is not a ’cause shirt’ we do have our own costs and wages to cover, tho’ we are looking to at least fund a banner for the 28 March Put People First Demo out of sales.

I hope this helps fill you in.

  5. Murdoch’s other revolutionary organ, The Times, published the list of sport sponsorships funded by the Royal Bank of Scotland. These included the paltry £6,000,000 over 3 years for Zara Phillips who most of us would agree is one of the world’s leading sports women.

  6. Hey Mark,

Seriously, thanks for the reply. I’ll keep an eye out for the next t-shirt where the proceeds go to a non-profit…
