1160444813P07EPj Ahh, there’s nothing like the elections to the European Parliament to get the heart racing. If you can’t wait to get down to the polling station next Thursday here’s a taster of the thrill of the real thing. Please vote only once unless you are Irish or come from somewhere else with a strong tradition of electoral fraud.

You can enter a preference of your own if yours is not mentioned. For technical reasons that I don’t understand the box for other answers is floating around but don’t let that put you off.

  1. A while ago the BBC World Service ran a competition to find out what the “world’s best song” is. The poll winner was the Wolfe Tones’ dreadful “A nation once again”.

The same sort of funny business seems to be happening here. Otherwise how to explain the SPGB garnering 25% of the vote? I’m not sure if the best thing is to offer sympathy or professional help to anyone who feels that rigging a vote on this site is a useful way to spend time.

  2. Not necessarily funny business. Your readership is unlikely to be representative of the general population…perhaps your blog has a previously unrecognised loyal following amongst SPGB supporters?

  3. Maybe it’s because the ISG didn’t put up a candidate, and your readership considered the SPGB as the next best option?

  6. I’m encouraged by the bigger vote for the Greens than No2EUYesToDem. I imagine most of the voters/readers of Liam’s blog are reasonably hard core leftwingers so it seems that the No2EU project doesn’t find a ringing endorsement even on the hard left.

  7. It’s hard to believe that the SPGB will get 73 votes in the real election, let alone Liam’s poll.

An alternative explanation suggests itself – Liam has himself voted for the SPGB 73 times, purely for perverse comedy value. The scoundrel.

  8. Jodley – I like to get a laugh but, desperate, empty and dismal as my life might be, not even I would think it worthwhile to rig a poll on this site. Honest!

  9. Liam,

looks like you might have to dissolve your readership and elect another. 😉

    Jodley,

I think a more plausible explanation is that an ex-pat SPGBer spotted the poll on the blog and posted the link to a few people in his email address book.

Does that qualify as rigging a poll? When a vanguardist accusing you of packing a meeting, you know the world’s been turned upside down. 😉

PS – I think they’ll get more than 73 votes. Maybe not many more but after viewing the risible PEBs from both the SLP and the No2EU better a vote for socialism than the half baked reformism that Arthur and Bob were trying to serve up to the electorate.

    cheers

  10. I voted for the SPGB as they stand for democratic control and common ownership over the means of production, without the need for vanguards or leaders. Thus they’re also non-authoritarian and non-totalitarian believing that socialism is impossible unless the working class itself wants/understands it and organises to achieve it. I also like the fact that they don’t veer off into all the dead ends, tying themselves in knots, like the majority of the left does.

  11. I wonder what the British left would do if the SPGB got 37% in a real election.
Would it send you into disarray?
Would you feel betrayed by the working class who now seem to be working for socialism and having the audacity not to wait for the vanguard to tell them what to do?

  13. Jim,

I think it would send the SPGB into disarray. Myself included. 😉

But with regards to the vanguard?; it’s a busted flush and have been a very long time now. In the words of the great Del Amitri, they’re always the last to know.

  14. Hmmm? Taken over by invaders from a far galaxy or lead towards state-capitalist despotism by a well intentioned vanguard? It’s so difficult to choose!
