Just occasionally I get the feeling that I’m not making the most of everything that London has to offer. Saturday evening’s highlight was drinking a bottle of beer watching the cat watching a kids’ TV show about cats in a band which I’d recorded for that very purpose.

Tuesday evening finds me speaking at a Trotskyite cabal about the British far left’s plans for next year’s election. These are the notes I’ll be using.

  1. By the way, it seems that the CPB have changed their minds (again) and are back on board.

  2. I’m not sure that cats or dogs can ‘see’ TV, something to do with the ‘flicker threshold’, I believe.

I won’t say anything about visual and picture perception (something I know something about) other than that your cat is watching a light show.

It is probably on drugs, your cat seems too alert. I may tell the RSPCA – is the cat happy and well cared for? Take care.

  4. Cats can definitely see TV. One of mine was very interested in football matches and tried to get involved. He always went for the ball rather than the player.
The CPB sounds like a bag of cats at the moment.
There are two main signs of internal factionalism.
    1) Complete public silence on a major political issue.
    2) A different line every week.

  6. Of course……….. cats like watching all sorts of television, dvd’s and videos just like gold fish like staring into space and eating great globules of dog food and hamsters like walking on treadmills for hours on end just like dogs liked to talk to eachother on phone lines between the UK and Australia in the 70’s.

Of course that was all pre mobile phones

It’s something to do with doing something with their time on the planet as they dont need to sign on……. isnt it?

Well………. they dont need to sign on ‘yet’.

  7. Cats know more stuff than people think.
My cat also was familiar with the off-side rule and he’d almost certainly have realised that the Darren Bent “beach ball goal” should have been disallowed.
But he developed dangerous Stalinist sympathies when I went on holiday and left him with a CP-B cat-sitter.

The only socialists who will be in parliament in one year’s time are those elected as Labour Party candidates.

The real issue that your talk skirts around is how you define ‘left’ in the current context. I know there is a temptation to refer to a set of established principles that are cardinal to a distinctive tradition but this is not how we have historically defined the ‘ left’. If we consider the defining moments of the international movement such as the first world war, Bolshevik revolution, rise of fascism, post war boom, 1968, etc., the definition of ‘left’ changed quite radically according to the context and issues of the moment.

The question is just what are the defining issues of the moment and the relevant context? I would argue that using relational categories rather than assumed existing principles gives us a different definition drawn from the permanent war, assault on the environment and neo-liberal consensus.

This change of frame may give your argument a different edge and different points of reference. It may also raise some interesting issues about the gloomier claims in your presentation and the comments.

Don’t get me started on cats….

Of course cats can see TV. I used to have one that tried to catch the snooker balls before they rolled into the pockets. Wildlife documentaries also a big hit, especially those involving owls.

I had the whiskers advert that was produced for cats. Whenever I put it on, my moody mog either ignored it totally or became alarmed at its bizarre attempts to catch her attention. I felt she displayed the taste to know purveyors of detritus when she saw it.

My daughter was 9 months old and absolutely loved the advert. Now she miaows at my feet, demands cat food and licks her backside regularly and with great attention to detail. And those are her good points.
