Alf Filer, who is active in Brent and Harrow Unite Against Fascism, has sent this.

The BNP, from last Wednesday, have 2 weeks or face a possible injunction for contempt of court, as a result of not implementing changes to their “whites only” constitution. In the face of a possible court injunction, letters are being rushed out now to all the BNP members explaining the need to adapt their party rule book.

Griffin may be forced to concede these changes but that still does not make his fascist party legitimate. Nor should anyone else be fooled by any rule change that they may adopt. For the sake of the electoral strategy of Griffin and co, they may do anything needed to appease the legal niceties required of them by the law officers. However a fascist Holocaust denier remains a fascist in spite of any temporary concessions he and his party may make.

Robin Allen QC, representing the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC). , told the hearing at the Central London County Court that the changes the party had proposed to its constitution were “highly suspect” and “unquestionably” racially discriminatory. Even the Judge, Paul Collins confirmed that “on the face of it” the EHRC had put forward “powerful submissions”, saying some passages in the proposed text were vague. ( BBC News, Thursday, 28 January 2010). He further ordered them to pay £12,500 in court costs.

Griffin’s response was that the BNP must “adapt or die”. In the meantime, two of his supporters attacked a UAF supporter demonstrating outside the court, Simon Assaf, who received serious facial injuries as a result. So much for Griffin’s peaceful road to fascism.

In the meantime their friends and allies in Stoke last weekend, around 1000 EDL supporters, ran amok and attacked local people, shouting racist slogans. 14 arrests have since been made yet why were they given such a free hand in the first place? What happened to the forces of law and order that the anti-fascist movement is continuously told to rely on. Whilst Alan Johnson, the Home Secretary, gives morality lectures to the anti-fascists on freedom of speech.he permits the fascist mob to run riot.

The EDL has close links to the BNP, even though officially they deny it and distance themselves from its activities. Whether the constitutional rule changes by the BNP will go down well with them is another matter. In the mean time the NF and others are making their own electoral plans and organising closed and secret meetings. The twin strategies of the ballot box and the street are being pursued to maximise gains from the forthcoming General Election, building on the failures of New Labour to transform their prospects.

The anti-fascist movement has to be able to effectively respond to this situation, bringing together all anti-fascist /anti-racist forces . That is why it is essential that the UAF, at its conference on Feb 13th adopts the following resolution:

The following model resolution for the Unite Against Fascism national conference offers proposals for discussion by the anti-fascist movement as a whole.

‘We note that the rise of various fascist and racist groups in the UK over the past few years has become an increasingly growing concern, especially given the electoral wins of the BNP in the Euro and council elections.

The increase in racist, Islamaphobic and homophobic attacks, along with the attempts by groups such as the EDL, SIOE and others to demonstrate on the streets has raised new challenges to the anti-fascist movement.

The impact of the worsening economic crises, rising unemployment and cuts in public services has provided abreeding ground for the racists and fascists to use scapegoats to blame the crises on. We put the blame squarely on those who pursue profits at the expense of working people.

We further note that over the past year, thousands of anti-fascists have been mobilised across the country tosuccessfully oppose the BNP and their allies. The support of the organised labour movement, trade union branches, student organisations, women’s organisations, faith based organisations, ethnic based groups, gay groups and many others have come together to say, “they shall not pass”. We remember Cable Street and Lewisham, where the fascists were sent packing. There is no place for these Nazis.

The UAF has played a key role in providing support, resources and leadership in the various anti-fascist campaigns. In ensuring that the BNP and others are defeated in the General Election and challenged effectively where ever they raise their message of hatred, we call on the UAF to:

a. To continue to mobilise mass action on the streets and elsewhere in denying the fascists and racists any opportunity to spread their message of hatred and division.

b Organise a representative delegate based conference open to all who are actively supporting the struggle against fascism and racism.

c. Adopt a democratic national and regional structure which is made up of elected delegates and representatives from the whole of the movement.

d. Encourage UAF groups to be established within unions, workplaces, campuses and community groups.

e. To arrange regional and national conferences with workshops to discuss wider issues related to the fight against fascism and racism.

f. To jointly sponsor an international conference uniting the wider international struggles against fascism both in the UK and elsewhere.

3 responses to “BNP tests its powers to provoke”

  1. Excellent article.

While yes, of course, Capitalism is to blame as it´s global economic crisis of mass unemployment worsens

All I would add is that I thinkthat the New Labour Government should also be blamed for the rise in support for the BNP, due to it´s neo liberal capitalist policies of divide and rule and wealth creation at the expense of poverty and oppression . Along with it´s never ending racist imperialist wars in particular, which have been fuelled by the propagation of racist colonialist ideas of white British supremacy and anti Muslim racism, Islamaphobia, anti Arab racism.

It cannot be emphasized enough the importance of bring ing UNITY,ORGANISATION and COORDINATION to the whole of the anti racist and anti fascist movement and discussing and debating in a democratic, open and transparent manner, inorder to develop effective and sound ways and means, stategies for countering and defeating the BNP and other right wing racist and fascist forces out there.

There needs to be a thorough analysis of why the BNP has been able to gain such electoral support over the last few years.

The need for a new Left party is ever more urgent as it is not suffice to simply oppose support for a racist and fascist party, the Left needs to unite to provide a viable and relevant socialist alternative vision.

  2. New Labour is to blame for propping up a capitalist system and implementing of anti-working class policies in the interest of capital.

The crises it has governed over and its failed policies has allowed a vaccuum to open up on the right and enabled the fascists to emerge. Some of their policies has given credence to the far right, such as Brown’s British jobs for British workers, attacks on the rights of assylum seekers etc.

The failure of the Left to provide an effective and united response and the lack of leadership has meant that the fascists have increased their confidence in being more provocative and active.

The challenge is for us to provide a relevent socialist alternative in combatting both the fascists and this Government.

  3. There appears to be a view by some that the united front against fascism needs to be tied to a new party of the Left. This in my view would be ultra left as there are many anti-fascists in the labour movement who would not yet have broken from social democracy or are remaining inside the Labour Party yet are key to being involved in this unity needed.

The need for a new Left allignment is a process that must take place parrallel to this but not to be used as a barrier to building the anti-fascist unity required. Yes an effective anti-fascist strategy must be to link this struggle with an anti-capitalist struggle and programme however not instead of doing both. We must win anti-fascists over to the need for a class programme whilst working with them.

Some have suggested that the need for a new Party should be tied into my resolution, which I feel would be an error.
