While the Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition (TUSC) was formed to fight the general election, they are also running a number of candidates in the local elections.  These candidates are standing under a variety of names, with Socialist Alternative/SP contesting all 18 seats in Coventry and the Carlisle Socialist and Trade Union wing contesting 5 seats (apparently 1 further candidate had a nomination rejected.  There are sitting Socialist Alternative/SP councillors defending their seats in Lewisham and Coventry, and a sitting ‘Save Huddersfield NHS’ councillor in Kirklees defending their seat as TUSC.  In Manchester, SWP supporters are standing as TUSC and going head to head with Respect in Rusholme ward.

  2. Yes, the former councillor’s vote there has actually gone up by a few hundred since his last win, but he got swamped by the turnout. The SP expect to lose councillors in Lewisham too.

  5. The Socialist Party lost their seat on Kirklees Council (the Metropolitan District based on Huddersfield in Yorkshire).

Dr Jackie Grunsell is a local GP who sensationally won a Labour seat four years ago as part of a local campaign against NHS cuts, under the title ‘Save Huddersfield NHS’. There are three seats here elected annually and in subsequent years SP members standing as Save Huddersfield NHS’ failed to repeat her victory.

Dr Grunsell defended her seat this year under the TUSC label and also stood in the General election for the Colne Valley constituency the ward is in, but came fourth in the ward, though with a creditable 17.5%. She scored 1,472 almost double what she scored in the General election (741) indicating a high degree of local support not reflected in the vote for a General Election candidate.

As there are annual elections (3 out of 4 years) in this ward, it might be possible to build a stronger socialist vote locally here and regain the seat over time. But the difficulty will be the myriad of labels and flags of convenience used by the SP make it difficult to maintain voter interest as they are more likely to remember party labels and identity.
