    I don’t know how left wing she is but poor result for Greens in Oxford East following Tatchell standing down. Labour surprisingly holding the seat comfortably from LibDems

    well my vote was frankly rubbish and generally we are down but Caroline won which is the only thing that matters when it comes to left wing Greens!

    Let me declare an interest in my partners first time outing as a Green candidate in the local elections. 10.6% (and an average of 1.5 votes for each leaflet delivered!)

    The Lib Dems may be slippery fish willing to go into coalition with Torys all over the place but they stood on a platform that was clearly to the left of Labour’s platform.

    If they had gained more seats then a) this could made an anti-tory alliance more likely and b) it would at least show that people where willing to vote a bit more left (while of course what they would have gotten may not have been at all left it would at least give more weight to left propaganda about protecting the poorest from the cuts) and c) made electoral reform more likely.

    It would be interesting to see an age breakdown of the Lib Dem vote. Perhaps there was some truth in their talk of Labour and Tories as “the old parties”, but that meant that the latter two’s vote most more reliable and probably voted earlier. May mean that the Lib Dem vote may be on the rise with the long term demographic.
    Or voters looked at the riots in Greece and didn’t fancy the party that would have enthusiatically joined the Euro.

    JK a) They’re not principled anti-tories, more seats would just have ensured that the Lib Dems bargaining position would have been strengthened,and in a better position to force the introduction of a form of PR that would mean continuous kingmaking by an unrepresentative centrist party.

    well comrades we have to keep building ecosocialism, tactical mistake of TUSC not to pile in and focus energy on Dave Nellist, like Greens did for Caroline and Respect did for their three key seats…

    I realise that Lib-Dem’s are opportunistic numpties but I really think people are missing a trick by failing to grasp the fact that they stood on a platform that was to the LEFT of Labour’s. We should be using this fact to make the anti-Tory argument that over 50% of people voted for ‘centre-left’ in preference to Tory right.

    If Lib’d get together with Tories I pretty sure this will cause massive arguments within their party and don’t imagine it will be that stable. Prime for bringing down.

    We should argue that doing so is a betrayal of their election promises. Its not possible to do this if you claim that Lib-Dem’s are transparently (as opposed to hiddenly) right-wing, because saying this equates to saying that people voted for the right.
