BBC 6Music has won a reprieve from the BBC Trust, after the broadcaster’s governing body said it had failed to make a case for the radio station’s closure say the FT.

The trust received tens of thousands of expressions of support from the public for the specialist music station since March’s BBC-wide strategic review proposed axing it.

Any plans to close 6 Music will only be considered after the BBC executive creates a “wider digital radio strategy”, which the trust’s chairman, Sir Michael Lyons, said was difficult given the “lack of clarity” on when the analogue radio signal will be switched off.

Where else do you get to hear this stuff?

  1. I will personally take part of a share of the credit for this, as I wrote in forcibly stating my opposition to losing a source of language learning input. And filmi gossip, and filmi music.

The stated rationale for closing the station, i.e. that it was over encroaching into the space the commercial stations cover, really never made any sense given that

Murdock can stick that in his pipe and smoke it!

Not good news for the Asian network however, can’t help thinking that the difference might be that 6 music (much as I love it) has an audience that is far whiter and more middle class then the Asian Network.

  3. sorry lost the plot there … meant to finish second sentence with – “their play list covered a diversity of music that commercial stations never would”
