This is a deeply weird cultural artefact. On first viewing you may start wondering if someone has slipped a hallucinogen into your tea. Even on the second or third occasion that possibility can’t be entirely discounted.

An artistic vision lies behind the performance. Unhappily it is misjudged on every possible level. Su Pollard works her socks off in a performance of the Beatles’ “Back in the USSR ” which serves only to leave the watcher slack jawed with bewilderment. Best known for comedy she throws herself into Lennon and McCartney’s reflection on the post Stalin Soviet Union with an unforeseeable earnestness. To the untrained eye she seems to dance very well and some serious choreography had gone into it. Serious and mysterious. Look at the male dancers’ marching routine which may have been intended to evoke Red Square on May Day but looks more like Depeche Mode limbering up.

It’s unlikely you’ll enjoy this clip but you won’t see anything like it again this year. Or next.
