A minor irony about this is that the vote Connolly campaign was being promoted by SIPTU, the very epitome of a corrupt, bureaucratic union.

Connolly beat Bono.
The Irish Times reports that “John Hume topped the poll ahead of Michael Collins in second place, Mary Robinson in third and James Connolly and Bono who followed in fourth and fifth place.”
