Here is one small extract from Frances’ contribution at last night’s SSP meeting hosted by Socialist Resistance in London. I’ve got about an hour and a half of it on tape and will be putting up other chunks in due course. I thought it best to start with a juicy bit.

The meeting was smaller than we’d anticipated, about 30 people which was roughly the same number as the Overseas Christian Student Fellowship in the room next door. Frances said she was a bit disappointed that no one was there representing those organisations which disagreed with the SSP’s recent actions. I did see one journalist from SW there but he looked in the door and walked away. What was striking was just how frank she was about the range of difficulties Sheridan’s actions had caused the party and how the party is recovering well from the split. Such a contrast to what I’ve grown accustomed to.

“The meeting was smaller than we’d anticipated, about 30 people which was roughly the same number as the Overseas Christian Student Fellowship in the room next door.”They were singing as well or was that noise from the SU bar? There was the bloke from Solidarity who had swallowed the line about Sheridan. I was sitting in parallel from him and he kept shaking his head while looking bemused. Tempting to say to him, “Wake up, comrade!” I thought Frances was an entertaining, witty and good speaker. I was pleased to see a discussion on gender and position of women. And there are very real problems on the left with understanding what is meant by women’s liberation, feminism and the whole issue of oppression. The Sheridan case has thrown up these issues which need disentangling and explored.Shame it wasn’t bigger tho’…
