GLOBAL EMERGENCY: the battle against climate change

By Roy Wilkes with a foreword by George Galloway MP

A contribution to debate from Manchester Respect
36 pages: Published June 2008 £1.00

Climate change is the biggest challenge facing the world in the 21st Century. Without urgent action we face a uncertain future where the world’s poor will be hardest hit – but where everyone will suffer.

Both New Labour and the Tories talk about the threat of climate change but the rhetoric is matched only by the depths of their dishonesty. For, in reality, their promotion of free market ‘neo-liberal’ economics is making the problem worse.

Millions make daily, often difficult, choices to reduce their ‘carbon footprint’ only to see the benefit wiped out in seconds as Ford or General Motors launch a new gas-gussler. No wonder many feel helpless.
In this pamphlet Roy Wilkes argues for a different strategy to tackle climate change – one that puts human need not company profits first.

The battle against climate change is not only essential for our survival as a species but, if successful, can re-engage humanity with nature and in doing so lay the foundations of a sustainable future for all.

One response to “Climate change pamphlet from Manchester Respect”

  1. Thanks for putting up this advert Liam. We hope that this pamphlet really does start a debate within and without respect about building a bigger movement around climate change.

For too long the debate has focused on either the meaningless rhetoric spouted by Blair, Brown and Cameron – who all say climate change is a serious issue but then go on to propose policies that will make it worse – or around how we can all reduce our individual carbon footprints by switching off our microwave clocks and fitting new lightbulbs – which often leaves people feeling helpless.

Now I’m not against energy saving lightbulbs – in fact a simple thing would be to ban the old incandescent bulbs forthwith – but unless we develop a collective and positive strategy that challenges the economic priorities of our rulers then we are in for a some serious problems.
