This piece by Ralf Sotscheck comes from the German newspaper Die Tageszeitung. I’m assured that it’s based on the things that I’ve posted in the last couple of weeks about the north of Ireland and the Orange Order. Like many of you I’ll have to take this on trust. Even though I went to evening class for two years in a vain attempt to sustain a relationship with a German speaker I never progressed much beyond “ich heisse Liam” “Eine tasse te bitte” and “das schmeckt”.

Gibt es einen umweltfreundlichen Rassismus? In Nordirland schon.

  1. My German stopped with “ich bin dreizehn jahre alt” but Mr Google says:
Is there an environmentally friendly racism? In Northern Ireland already. Last Monday hailed the Northern Irish Protestants, the 319th Anniversary of the Battle of the Boyne in which William of Orange his Catholic father-in-law James II defeated and the Protestant succession in Britain secured. Actually, the anniversary was already a day before, but on a Sunday, no decent Protestant marches. The celebrations, in which huge fire ignited, in which one Irish flags, Celtic Glasgow-shirts and all kinds of Catholic emblems burns, by the Orange Order organized. If enough alcohol vertilgt has been compounded by a few mostly masked paramilitary fighters and added fire gun salutes, and sometimes pulls the mob then in a Catholic district and hesitate a few houses, including from residents.

This is the friars now a bit embarrassing, because the reason of the peace process is no longer welcome – even if you do not like this abrückt that members of the Order to fly when they are at a wedding or funeral of a Catholic church or the son of a Catholic marries. But one has to summarily Horror Fest “orange carnival” and officially wondering why Catholics do not participate.

The leave time each year before 12 July fluchtmöglichkeit like the country. In addition, they also have every reason. The flags with the letters “CAT”, for the celebration of the anniversary herausgekramt be mean to “kill all TAIS”, where “TAIS” an insult to Catholics. That was this year different, justifies the Order: it now meant “Keep tidy Antrim – County Antrim keep clean.

To demonstrate that it can seriously believe that this time there were some biodynamic fire: pyramidal metal cages, which are filled with wood shavings and on a pallet, such a thick layer of sand so that the grass is not damaged. The metal cage is still enough room for a couple of Catholics or Romanians or best Catholic Romanians, said a journalist in allusion to the pogroms in the spring. Actually, such fire in Northern Ireland illegally, but the regional parliament has passed a “bonfire Management Program” was launched, for the “safe, clean and family friendly” fire-aim. As long as the families are Protestant.

“This novel beacon signal a new era,” says City Councilor David Robinson, on the other hand, the unenviable ‘Committee for good relations “belongs. “You have people praise for their vision.”

The Belfast Regional Parliament supported the orange-ecological festivals, each with 1,500 pounds, it also palatable to Catholics. That would be the same as if the Nazis organic wine to celebrate their rich and hope that some asylum seekers come cheerful.

“DIe Wahrheit” – “the truth”, is the back page of the taz, which is named after the since-1989-defunct daily newspaper of the same name, published by the West Berlin arm of the East German ruling SED (West Berlin not officially being part of West Germany, didn’t have the luck to have it’s own branch of the West German CP, the DKP, instead it got the SEW, funded from East Berlin)….

And you can bet on anything on that page that it is “satire”, or anything but the truth – just like in the former daily paper its title takes. And like similar pages in other German newspapers most of the snippets are culled from British tabloids (which goes to explain a) the Germans love for the British, and b) why they consider the British to be “really crazy folks”) .

Anyway – regardless of all that, my favourite “Wahrheit” piece was a half-page on Khomeni’s Parisian exile pre-1979, where he, according to the article, would visit sex clubs every Saturday afternoon to hear prostitutes being whipped. Being almost blind, the sound was the main thing for him, and the whips would be treated with olive oil to make as much noise as possible, for as much pleasure (for Khomeni) as possible,

Needless to say, the article resulted in a “clarification” a few days later, pointing out the satirical nature of the page and that the term “truth” was not, here, to be taken literally. It seems someone got cold feet (or was expecting a fatwa of some kind)….

And as to Ralf Sotschek – he’s a good writer. Based in a pub, I mean, a village near Cork, I believe, he is the “taz”‘ “Britain and Ireland correspondent”. Which means, as far as I can tell, that he watches the news and summarises whatever they said on Newsnight a few days beforehand. And his “Gebrauchsanweisung für Irland” – http://www.libri.de/shop/action/productDetails/2158373/ralf_sotscheck_gebrauchsanweisung_fuer_irland_3492275141.html – isn’t a bad read either…

Noch einmal mit den oekologischen Leuchtfeuern…

Yes, this would be the German equivalent of those pieces you get in the British press about those crazy French or Americans. But he kind of hits the nail on the head anyway.

This is useful reading for people trying to understand why Sinn Féin is faltering. To date four elected representatives have resigned from the party since the recent elections – in Dublin the Adams-led organisation is losing ground to left-wing rivals. North Belfast MLA Gerry Kelly has publicly argued with Breandán MacCionnaith of Éirigí and others over the Ardoyne clashes provoked by an Orange march – something is stirring.
