I have no idea how influential the Your Party Bolshevik Caucus is in the decision-making processes of the host organisation. They take the view that “Any alliance with capitalist parties such as the Greens will threaten our working-class foundation.” It may not be a judgement we all agree on, but it does have the merit of clarity.

No such merit is to be found in the Your Party statement on the Gorton and Denton by-election. An AI summary would be something like “Reform have a real chance of winning the seat because Labour are rubbish. Someone really should do something but we’re too busy with internal stuff to decide on anything. Watch this space.”

Much in the manner of the Bolshevik Caucus, they are crossing their fingers that they will manage to one day build a party that is up to the job.

Your Party’s dwindling band of supporters are given no advice about what to do either on election day or before other than “mobilise”. This will mean in practice a few street stalls and maybe a rally. They could point out that objectively a vote for the Monster Raving Loony Party is a vote against Reform. So too is one for the Lib Dems.

Renowned political pundits Ladbroke’s bookies are now saying that the Greens are the odds-on favourites to win the by-election and that was before the bandwagon to get Mandelson thrown into prison for corruption started. Labour’s position really could not be any weaker.

This makes the Your Party position all the more dreadful. Labour and the entire ruling class media correctly understand that the Greens are a radical, insurgent left party now. Labour reeks of corruption and genocide and is frequently indistinguishable from Reform’s racism. None of this is acknowledged by Your Party.

Some months ago I held the view that Zarah Sultana and Jeremy Corbyn should encourage their supporters to join the Green Party to combine the strengths of the two organisations. They didn’t and the world has moved on.

There is a school of thought that argues Corbyn is surrounded by bad advisors. Claiming that today is wilful ignorance. The line of the Your Party statement is exactly what Corbyn was saying when I saw him speak last week. He offered nothing but pious abstractions about the rise of the far right and the need for a new party. He said nothing about the emergence of the Greens as an electoral force and arguably an emerging social movement. His principal collaborators are people who agree with him.

As much as all the tragi-comic infighting and public brawls, this stupidly sectarian attitude to the Gorton and Denton by-election is going to finish off Your Party as a serious formation. It will be a home for people who think spending an evening arguing with the Your Party Bolshevik Caucus is a productive use of time.

  1. I can’t see anything better coming out of all this than Respect mk II – and at the moment it looks more likely that we’ll get a rerun of the Socialist Labour Party. Or, what’s perhaps most likely of all, that the two main factions will arm-wrestle each other into total immobility.

What a mess. What a waste. Oh, Jeremy Corbyn.
